Zhang Jianyu

Dr. Zhang, Jianyu found the China program of Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).  Since 1999, he has been responsible for the establishment and overall management of EDF China program.  He is currently the active longest-serving chief representative of all known foreign organizations’ China programs.  EDF China program’s success led to EDF becoming the first officially registered foreign Environmental NGO in China under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, following the promulgation of China’s foreign NGO law effective on January 1st, 2017.

Dr. Zhang also helped found and manage the first professional Joint Venture environmental consulting firm in 1992.  He served as China program advisor for the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) implementing the first Sino-US environmental cooperation project from 1997 to 1999.

Dr. Zhang is a Fellow of the prestigious Aspen China Fellowship program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.  He has served as board directors of China-based publicly traded companies and advisory board members of Fortune 500 companies.  Dr. Zhang is an executive board director of China Association for International NGO Cooperation (CANGO).  Dr. Zhang is the international liaison person for the BRI International Green Development Coalition.

Being an expert on environmental and public policies, with a focus on the application of Market-Based Instruments (MBIs) in solving environmental problems, Dr. Zhang is known for his leadership and contribution to the establishment of China’s Carbon Trading System, the largest in the world.  Dr. Zhang has authored many peer-reviewed articles, columns, book chapters and a frequent commentator on environmental issues in China with public media. Dr. Zhang serves on several advisory boards, including Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), China-ASEAN Environmental Cooperation Center, and is a special advisor for China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED).  Dr. Zhang is a visiting fellow with the School of Public Policy and Management of Tsinghua University.

Dr. Zhang got his advanced degrees from Tsinghua University (Bachelor), Stanford University (Master), and Carnegie Mellon University (Ph.D.).  He recently completed his Ph.D. studies in Finance from Chinese Academy of Social Science.
