Bass Baritone

Chinese-born bass-baritone, Mr. Yang was propelled into the spotlight in 2007 when he won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. After starting his studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Mr. Yang graduated from The Julliard School, The Salzburg Young Artist Project, and The Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Program. Mr. Yang was appointed Brand Ambassador for Montblanc in recognition of his emerging stature as a prominent musical and cultural figure in Asia. He has been Artist in Residence with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and award winner of the Alice Tully Vocal Arts Award, which led to his duo recitals with soprano Susanna Phillips and pianist Brian Zeger.

Mr. Yang’s opera highlights include the leading roles he performed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Seattle Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opernhaus Zürich, and the Washington National Opera, amongst others. He has played in concerts with leading orchestras including the English Concert and Harry Bicket, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and the Ensemble ACJW. Moreover, he has made numerous debuts at the request of the world’s most influential conductors including, David Robertson, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Alan Gilbert, Matthew Halls, and Gianluigi Gelmetti, amongst others.

In the current season, Mr. Yang has two major role debuts. One with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden, and with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and Alexander Liebreich. His most recent performances took place at the Beijing Music Festival, the Grant Park Music Festival, and the White Nights Festival in St Petersburg. Next year, Mr. Yang will reprise Buddha Passion with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel as part of the orchestra’s celebrations of the Chinese New Year.
