Professor Norman C. Tien is the Chair Professor in Microsystems Technology in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong.
Supporting the drive for Innovation and Technology in the society, Professor Tien takes up different advisory roles in the Government such as Committee on Innovation, Technology and Re-industrialisation, Chairman of Robotics Alliance served by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park, and a panel member in the Research Grants Council.
Prior to joining HKU, he served for five years as Dean and Nord Professor of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University’s Case School of Engineering. Prior to CWRU, Professor Tien served as chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California at Davis and held a joint appointment at the University of California at Berkeley. He previously held faculty positions in Cornell University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has also served as a guest professor at Peking University and received a distinguished title of Honorary Professor of Tianjin University in Tianjin, China.
Professor Tien received his Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego, MS from the University of Illinois, and BS from the University of California at Berkeley.
